Next-Gen Scion tC Will be the RWD Coupe Developed by Toyota and Subaru

toyota_subaru_joint_coupe.jpg
It's already been confirmed that Toyota and Subaru are working on a new RWD coupe that will be sold both as a Subaru and Toyota. Well now reports are surfacing that Toyota's version of the RWD coupe will actually be sold under the Scion brand as the replacement for the current tC.

Scion definitely needs some new models to renew interest in the brand. A RWD coupe could be just the thing the brand needs.

Toyota To Unveil Small Electric Car Concept At Detroit [Detroit Auto Show]

According to the WSJ, Toyota plans to unveil a "small battery electric-car concept" at next month's Detroit Auto Show alongside the new Prius. Is this a GEM or GEM Peapod competitor or something more?

With the race on to get away from icky gasoline, Toyota has announced in addition to unveiling the production version of the new Toyota Prius, it will display an electric "city car" based on a new compact model we're not supposed to know is the Toyota iQ. So it's not quite as small as a GEM electric — or even the GEM Peapod concept — but rather one step above it. Apparently, the car will slot into the space of a limited range, but affordable, electric with a possible price point around the $20,000 range. [WSJ]

GM CEO Rick Wagoner's Chevy Volt Beats A Toyota Prius In Washington [Moment Of Zen]

We appreciate the exuberance of the good people over at GM-Volt regarding the 2011 Chevy Volt. In the midst of the Carpocalypse it's nice to see someone excited about GM product that doesn't begin with a "C" and end in either a "V" or a "ZR1." Still, we can't help but enjoy the humor in the statement posted with this picture:

That’s GM’s CEO Rick Wagoner driving the Volt experimental prototype mule car of the right making sure to stay one step a head of the Prius!

Well, at least it's one way that GM can stay ahead of Toyota in the alternative-energy game.

Report: Toyobaru delayed until 2012 or later

The rumors of the sports car that Toyota and Subaru were working on have been replaced by rumors that the car has been put on hold. Earlier news had posited a rear-wheel-drive sports car with "wonderful style," based on the current Subaru Legacy platform, with a boxer engine putting out around 200 hp through a six-speed manual. Originally due in 2011, now, according to Nikkei, the car has been pushed back to at least 2012. If things get worse before they get better, we have a feeling that 2012 will also come and go without Toyota fielding another dedicated sports car entrant. So move along, folks, there's nothing to see here, please return to your Camrys and cue up Queen: another one bites the dust...

Toyota Prius Sales Continue To Rise Amidst High Gas Prices

Toyota Prius sales continue to rise amongst high gas prices, and fear of global warming. Although it’s my belief its more about how people are affected by high gas prices than by people’s concern for the planet.

toyota prius

From Autodeadline.com:
“Toyota announced that worldwide cumulative sales of the Toyota Prius-the world’s first mass-produced hybrid vehicle-have passed the 1 million mark, with approximately 1,028,000 units sold as of the end of April this year. Currently, Prius sales are robust in more than 40 countries and regions, particularly in Japan and North America.

Toyota CNG Camry Hybrid Concept [LA Auto Show]

Toyota has released images of the Toyota CNG Camry Hybrid Concept, or the T. Boone Pickens cruiser as we like to call it. Already known for their gas-electric hybrids, this concept combines the Hybrid Synergy Drive system with a natural gas-fueled engine. Toyota claims the Hybrid should travel more than 250 miles per fill-up, which could theoretically occur at any of the approximately 1,000 CNG refueling stations in the US. As this is currently just a concept, they've added an aggressive body kit with a covered grille which certainly distinguishes it from the regular Camry Hybrid. Natural gas has been part of the alternative fuel discussion because of its domestic production capacity and relatively stable price. Details about the CNG Hybrid Camry from Toyota below.

A Camry Hybrid Fueled by CNG

As you very likely know, we’re big believers in the concept of hybrid vehicles. We build gas-electric hybrids in several styles; one of them, our Prius, is the most fuel-efficient vehicle in America.

But we also believe that there’s more than one way to solve a problem. One problem we’d like to solve involves the unpredictable nature of gas prices.

Gas prices are relatively low now, but they were incredibly high last summer, and could well revert to those high levels. But the price of compressed natural gas (CNG) remains fairly stable, and there’s a strong, reliable domestic supply of CNG. It just happens to be one of many alternative fuel applications being explored in Toyota’s broad sustainable mobility research and development strategy.

That’s why we built a special concept CNG Camry Hybrid that we’ll display at the Los Angeles Auto Show on Wednesday.

To convert a stock Camry Hybrid to a CNG vehicle, the gasoline fuel system was replaced with a CNG system that includes a pair of CNG tanks installed in the spare-tire well of the vehicle’s trunk. Because it now lacks a spare tire, the CNG Camry Hybrid rolls on runflat tires.

And roll it does. With the proposed CNG equivalent of 8 gallons of gasoline in its tanks, the estimated range of the CNG Camry Hybrid is more than 250 miles. Link that efficiency to the price of CNG and you can see why we’re interested in this – as this is written, CNG is about a dime cheaper, per gallon, than the national average price of regular-grade 87-octane gasoline.

But price and efficiency are only the tip of the iceberg of CNG benefits. Natural gas also produces lower particulate emissions and lower levels of nitrous oxide (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2) and non-methane organic gasses (NMOG) when compared with gasoline. And because CNG is so clean, potential wear and tear on an engine fueled by it is greatly reduced.

Those are the considerable upsides to CNG. There also are downsides. An important one is that there are fewer than 1,000 CNG refueling stations in the U.S., with fewer than half of them open to the public. Also, natural gas is less dense than gasoline. So a CNG engine will have approximately 10% less power than an equivalent gasoline engine. Also, a CNG vehicle’s fuel tank must be cylindrical, so it is more difficult to package than a gasoline tank, which can be shaped to conform to any available space.

We want to underscore the fact that the CNG Camry Hybrid is just a concept vehicle. This concept vehicle is a statement that we intend to include CNG in our diverse portfolio of future alternative-fuel R&D. Our purpose in building it as a concept is to demonstrate the efficiency and adaptability of Hybrid Synergy Drive, and to demonstrate that we continue to work with a variety of powertrain concepts to ensure that we have products that meet the current and future needs of our customers on a global basis. We think you’ll find the CNG Camry Hybrid interesting. So if you’re visiting the LA show, feel free to drop by and take a look.

We Dig Northwest Style!

I’m still sorting through all the photos I took during my trip to Seattle… believe me, there were A LOT. However, I thought I’d just take a brief detour from the Formula D action to showcase some of the cars I saw at the event, which really clue you in on how dope the Pacific Northwest cars are. I just don’t understand how people can sleep on the scene up there so much! All the big car magazines and media sites seem to only focus on Southern Cali, but those of us who have traveled all over the world can tell you that the Northwest has style!!! Tons of it. Let’s take a look! Continue reading and view more photos on MotorMavens
