Monterey 2009: first impressions

We’re just back from Monterey, and while we’re choking the HMN servers with thousands of photos, we thought we’d share a few images and impressions from the whirlwind of shows, races and auctions we attended.  Pebble Beach showed why it continues to be the world’s most prestigious concours, with cars like the class-winning 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Atalante of Ray Scherr shown here. You can see a full list of winners at the Pebble Beach Concours website. We got there before the ocean mists had burned off; by 10:30 or so, the lawn was filled with people.

concorso

Concorso Italiano moved to a new location this year, the Laguna Seca Golf Ranch, and by all indications it was a success. This year’s featured celebrations included 25 years of the Ferrari 288 GTO, and De Tomaso’s golden anniversary.  Instead of the obligatory photo of a bunch of red Ferraris, we thought we’d show you both ends of a Lanborghini Espada at one time.

Another something new was Mecum’s presence on the Monterey scene, at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Resort & Spa on the Del Monte Golf Course. The newcomer stole some thunder from the established Monterey auctions, selling the 1965 Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe for $7.25 million, a record for an American car at auction. Full results from the auction are online, but you’ll need to register with the site to get them. The auction house earned itself quite a bit of goodwill by allowing spectators into both the preview and the auction for free.

rm

RM returned to the Portola Hotel & Spa and Monterey Conference Center in the middle of Monterey, kicking off its sale with the Nick Alexander woodie collection, which brought more than $7 million in total sales. Tops among the woodies was a rare 1946 Mercury Sportsman Convertible, which sold for $368,500. Complete results aren’t yet available, but will be up on RM’s website soon.

russo

Can’t mention RM without mentioning their next-door neighbor, Russo and Steele. (I wasn’t at the Marriott Hotel for their auction, but Jim Donnelly was, so I’m stealing one of his photos.) Russo’s results will be up on their website. We’ll be talking about all of these auctions in more detail as we digest the results, but two sales worth mentioning here were a 1961 356 Carrera 2/2000 GS formerly owned by Dr. Ferry Porsche, which sold for $330,000, and a 1964 Shelby Cobra CSX 2492 that brought selling for $475,000.

gooding

Gooding returned to the Pebble Beach Golf Course, and sold 54 of 68 lots for a total of $50.8 million. The top sale, a 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider, brought $5,115,000. Complete results are on their website.

leno

Can’t leave this Monterey report without one of our many Jay Leno spottings. Here, he’s inspecting the burner of a 1904 White Type D, which he reported looked as if it hadn’t been lit since the car’s restoration. Did he add the car to his collection? We don’t know; if you know, let us know.
